Family Takes Golf to a New Level

Family Takes Golf to a New Level

Golf is a sport played by the young and the old, the fat and the skinny, the athletic and the uncoordinated, by people of all colors, races and ethnicities.  Golf presents challenges to any player of any level, whether itâ??s winning a tournament, getting a par, or breaking 100 for the first time.  But if you were to ask golfers in my family what their biggest challenge is: they would reply, â??winning the family reunion golf tournament.â?

Over the years our family golf tournament has evolved from a â??funâ? event into a â??win-at-any-costâ? event.  This past summer I witnessed arguing, ball throwing, club throwing, bogus scores, and a little bit of recreational drinking.  This tournament always seems to be the highlight of our reunion, and somehow manages to bring everybody together even through all the mayhem.  After playing in this event and looking back on it, I realize that golf has taught me many extraordinary things.  I can guarantee Tiger Woods has never learned so much from one tournament, or had more fun for that matter.

The host of the family reunion has the honor of choosing the course that we play.  This year we are at Oneonta Country Club in the heart of New York State.  Our group shows up and immediately the course declines from a five star rating to a three.  Itâ??s truly amazing how twelve people can have such a negative impact on an exquisite piece of land.

Upon arrival, we invade the driving range and practice green with our untucked shirts and coolers chock-full of beer.  This act scares the rest of the golfers away.  We get our practice in quickly because half of us havenâ??t golfed all year, and by this point it is August.  Others just want to show off their golf ability to everyone else and try to intimidate.  The intimidation is laughable because we are all family and know each other well, I think to myself, â??Who the hell are they kidding?!â?Â

With the video camera rolling, all twelve of us line up on the first tee.  From famous baseball players to auto mechanics to teachers, we have an assorted mix of golfers and golfing ability.  My great uncle and former baseball player, Frank Malzone, is the father of the four brothers who provide most of the entertainment for the group by being loud, and obnoxiously hilarious.  Videotaping the first tee shots feels like a good idea at this point because it can provide proof and pride for the players after the match.   I witness wormburners, hard slices, duck hooks, and the occasional shot down the fairway.  The video camera is catching all of it, and mass laughter ensues.  The carts that are loaded down with lots of beer filter out to find all the terrible shots, and the match is in progress.  The first hole, along with the last, is an epic scene.

Being in the last foursome, I hear the first group cussing and chanting after they make a putt, or miss it.  I always wonder when the day comes that we get kicked off the course for being loud.  A group of golfers behind us tell me that they are going to call the clubhouse on the groups in front of me because they are playing so slow.  Of course, this gives me a good laugh and I tell them that they are family and I will hurry them along.  We play slow because God forbid we ever lose a golf ball.

After the front nine there is a barrage of trash talk and lies to each other about our scores.  One group boasts they are nine under, which I find comical because my group is even par and playing well.  At this point the alcohol is getting the best of everyone. I see dirty looks, stares, and rage on the faces of the locals around us.  The club pro must have been thinking that if he can get through this day then he can get through anything.  The back nine starts and I see someone throw their golf ball in the fairway, and then another pick up a putt that was missed.  Nobody wants to lose and we are not afraid to go to any extreme to improve our scores.  We all knew that everybody else is cheating a little bit as well, so why not us too?  After a drunken team members falls face first into the sand trap, I throw my ball out of the bunker to set up a 3 foot birdie shot.

On the final hole the first group sits next to the eighteenth green and hassles the next group that is finishing.  This continues until the last group is finishing with all three other groups putting pressure on them to make this last putt.  I yell the name â??Newnanâ? at a cousin named Jimmy.  He has plagued me with this name my whole life, and now itâ??s his turn.  The infamous putter throw comes after he pushes the ball past the hole.  If only he could handle pressure situations.  The putter throw act riles everybody up and starts even more comical remarks and laughter.  I hear, â??Hey Jimmy, if you lost fifty pounds and acted more like an adult Iâ??d mistake you for Happy Gilmore.â?Â  The match comes to a close after that climax.  I donâ??t even know who won because everyone is so content with lying about their score at this point.

From this event I learned that my family is very competitive.  Probably too competitive for playing a gentlemenâ??s game.  I learned that former baseball players that are eighty years old can still hit the golf ball like Ben Hogan in his prime.  I learned that some people are hot heads, drunks, comedians, and occasionally good golfers.  The most important part of this event is that everyone always has fun.  We can all look back on this event and think about it for an entire year. Sometimes though, the worst part is reflecting, and knowing you canâ??t change the outcome for another year.  As one of the youngest player in this event, I look forward to many more intense competitions between all of us for years to come.  I also look forward to the continued entertainment, which Iâ??m positive will not be a problem.

Par 3 Golf Course – Fun For the Whole Family

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Now it’s time to head to the golf course. You can’t wait to try out that golf swing of yours. Try going to one of your local public golf courses. There are many very nice public golf courses that are also very challenging. These courses are much cheaper than a lot of your fancy country club type golf courses.

Check out what types of golf courses are in your area. There are a couple of golf courses by me that are only 9 holes. One of them is a par 3 golf course. This is an excellent type of course to bring your kids when you are just introducing them to golf. The course is smaller so they can hit any club they want. Also with the golf course being so short it is easier for them to walk it. Another advantage of a par 3 golf course is it gives you plenty of practice with your irons. You will always be using an iron off the tee so you will know exactly how far the green is and how far you hit your club. One other great advantage of a par 3 golf course is it’s not expensive. In fact it is cheaper for me to take my family there as it is to go to the driving range.

You should also see if they have a nice driving range, putting green and even a chipping green. These all come in handy to loosen you up before your round starts.

Don’t forget to check the clubhouse. See if they have a golf pro that runs the pro shop. If they do see if they offer lessons and how much they cost. This is a good way to learn the game and also become friends with the person who runs the show at the golf course.

So check around, find what is right for you and get out there and have some fun.

Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations Combine Golf with Family Fun

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Myrtle Beach golf vacations offer you a resort based golf holiday that is smack in the center of the 60 mile stretch of beach in Carolina that is known as the Grand Strand. With its hotels, night life and fabulous beach facilities, what else could you ask for? Golf courses? Well, of course: there are over one hundred of them!

The climate is great. The sun shines most of the year, yet it is not so hot that you cannot enjoy the golf. It can cater for every size of pocket from the small to the downright bottomless, yet everybody enjoys the same sun, the same beaches and the same choice of golf courses.

The Whole Family is Kept Happy

Myrtle Beach has so many golf courses that it is unlikely you will find the time to do a lot more than play golf, but your family will still want to be entertained, especially if they do not follow your passion for the game. A lot depends on whether the other half is male or female, and if you have brought the children with you. There is certainly no lack of shopping: Myrtle Beach has so much to offer, with up to the minute fashion boutiques, lots of shopping malls with the nationwide labels and retail outlets where there are lots of brand name stores to browse round.

For you there are an almost unlimited number of golf shops offering everything from a pack of tees to a full set of clubs, or the latest golf gear. It’s up to you if you want to let them loose downtown…rather you than me!

What about the rest of the family that wouldn’t know a golf ball from a ping pong ball? No problem. There are water sports of all kinds, parasailing, water skiing and jet skiing. There are hire shops everywhere so you don’t have to bring your own gear. They can try a round of putting while you play a round of golf. Who knows, they might catch the bug and be on the course with you this time next year.

Keep an Eye on the Waistline

After all that exercise you will all be hungry and the cuisine in Myrtle Beach is very varied. Every possible taste is met and you will probably need the exercise to work off all these little treats and luxuries you allow yourself while on vacation. You can have what you want, from lobster and steak to wings and slaw, and if you are not careful you will be returning home a few inches or a couple of sizes bigger than when you left. So use these gyms and try out these water sports because it’s unlikely your golf will work off all these extra calories.

As for the kids…well, it is a beach resort, so they will be well catered for with the white knuckle rides they love, and all the amusements for those too young for the more exciting rides. Myrtle Beach is truly a resort where the needs of every member of the family, from the youngest to the oldest, are met. Not just met but fully satisfied.

Myrtle Beach golf vacations are exactly what families need to make sure that everybody enjoys the vacation. No more complaining from the youngsters or your partner. They will be fully occupied and you will be able to enjoy your golf without worrying about what they will be saying next year when you suggest the same.

Golf Vacation For The Family

Friday, June 25th, 2010

A golf vacation is a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the gentle slopes of a perfectly landscaped golf course. From the islands of Hawaii to the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina, there is a destination not far from every golfer.

The typical accommodations for a golf vacation would be located on the country club grounds. Rentals from condominiums to homes are available at most areas. Each course generally offers gated entrance, well-maintained acreage and plenty of amenities for the entire family. While Dad is out swinging the clubs, Mom and the kids can be enjoying a swim in the pool or a nice relaxing day of nothing but nature.

Picturesque in their appearance, golf courses are the setting for many competitions throughout the year. Some are televised while others are private tournaments for local players. A golf vacation is a terrific way for the golfer, alone, to enjoy some time on the green or a family destination, as well.

When planning a trip, always make sure to confirm reservations ahead of time. Because of their popularity, golf resorts often book up fast. It is a good idea to call ahead at least 6 months in advance of your trip in order to reserve a room and a golf package. Everything from training sessions to professional tournaments can be found all throughout the United States.

If possible, surf the internet and call the local tourism center for the area that you wish to visit. Ask for brochures, visit websites and flip through travel and hotel guides. Each of these will give you an idea of the surrounding area, fun things to do, places to dine and things to see. Most golf resorts have a website, which will give you a very good indication on the various price packages, exterior and interior views of the accommodations and overall photos of the golf course itself.

If you are giving a golf vacation as a gift, there is no better way to surprise someone than with an unexpected getaway. Surprise your friend or loved one with a single golf ball, which you place in a small box and wrap it beautifully. Make sure that you are present with the gift is opened, or it will lose its luster. As the recipient opens the box, he/she will be stunned by the sight of a single golf ball. While wanting to seem grateful, the giftee does not quite understand the purpose. With a smile, you reply, I thought you could use this on your golf vacation; and hand him/her the envelope with their travel arrangements. This is just one way to make a surprise gift a real stunner, but you can think of your own creative way to surprise that special person with the vacation of a lifetime.

If you are planning the vacation as a family, there is not any need for a surprise. Instead, you will enjoy the fun of putting your heads together to plan out the perfect trip. There should be something for everyone in the family to enjoy, so choose an area that is plentiful with activities. If you like the ocean and he likes to golf, try Hawaii for the best of both worlds. Check out a world famous golf resort while basking in the sun underneath a swaying palm tree.
